How Studying In Australia Works

Understanding The Student Visa Pathway

The Student visa (Subclass 500) is the primary visa for anyone studying full-time in Australia, and it is generally valid for the duration of your enrolled course, for courses of up to five years. To be granted this visa, you need an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) from a CRICOS-registered provider, evidence of at least AUD 29,710 in living costs for 2026, an approved English test result, such as an IELTS score of 6.0 for direct university entry, and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) purchased before you lodge. Since 2024, applicants must also satisfy the Genuine Student requirement, which replaced the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant test and looks closely at whether your chosen course genuinely fits your study background, career plans, and circumstances at home.

Studying in Australia does not end at course completion for many students. Graduates of eligible qualifications may be able to apply for the Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) to gain local work experience afterward, though recent changes have tightened this pathway considerably, with the age limit for most applicants now capped at 35, English requirements raised to around IELTS 6.5, and stay durations varying by qualification level and study location, with regional graduates generally receiving more generous post-study work rights than those who studied in a major city. While studying, most Subclass 500 holders can also work up to 48 hours per fortnight during term time, which for many students helps offset living costs alongside their course.

Your Application Journey

Getting Your Student Visa Application Ready for Submission

Building the foundation for a genuine student visa application.

The course and provider you choose shape everything that follows, since the Department assesses whether your study choice genuinely fits your background and goals. We help you settle on a course and CRICOS-registered provider that supports a strong Genuine Student case from the outset.

  •       Enrolment in a CRICOS-registered course matched to your academic background and career plans
  •       Receipt of your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) from your education provider
  •       Preparation of your Genuine Student statement, addressing your study intentions and ties to your home country
  •       Early planning for the financial and English language evidence your application will need

Meeting the benchmarks the Department checks closely.

Financial capacity and English proficiency are two of the most heavily scrutinised parts of a student visa application, and both need to be evidenced precisely rather than approximated. We check your documents against current requirements before anything is lodged.

  •       Evidence of at least AUD 29,710 in living costs for the primary applicant, with additional amounts required for a partner or dependent children
  •       An approved English test result meeting the minimum score for your course type, generally IELTS 6.0 for direct university entry
  •       Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) arranged with a government-approved insurer before lodgement
  •       Supporting documents such as academic transcripts, financial statements, and evidence of ties to your home country

Submitting your application and completing Department checks.

Once your evidence is complete, your application is lodged through ImmiAccount along with your supporting documents. Most applicants also need to complete biometrics at an approved visa application centre before a decision is made.

  •       Lodgement of your application with all supporting evidence through ImmiAccount
  •       Biometrics collection at an approved visa application centre, required for most applicants
  •       Processing times that vary depending on your education provider’s enrolment levels and how complete your application is
  •       Prompt responses to any requests for additional information from the Department

Understanding your conditions once you arrive.

Once your visa is granted, understanding exactly what it allows, and what comes next, matters just as much as the application itself. We walk you through your conditions and your options for family members and future visas before you travel.

  •       A visa generally valid for the duration of your course, for courses of up to five years
  •       The right to work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session
  •       Options to include eligible family members, with a parent or guardian able to apply separately for a Student Guardian visa if you are under 18
  •       A pathway toward the Temporary Graduate visa once you complete your qualification, subject to separate eligibility requirements

Not Sure Where To Start?

A Course-By-Course Assessment Of Your Visa Options

If you are still comparing courses or providers, it is worth weighing how that choice affects your visa options later, not just now. Studying at a regional campus, for example, can extend your eligibility for additional post-study work rights under the Temporary Graduate visa. We can review your shortlist against both your immediate student visa requirements and your longer-term plans.
