Moving From Study to Work

Your Path After Higher Education

The Post-Higher Education Work stream sits within the broader Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) and is aimed specifically at degree-level graduates, distinct from the Post-Vocational Education Work stream used by diploma and trade qualification holders. To qualify, your course must have been CRICOS-registered, taught entirely in English, and completed while you held a valid student visa, with a total study load of at least 92 weeks, roughly two academic years, spread across a minimum of 16 calendar months in Australia. Since 14 December 2024, a Graduate Certificate on its own no longer meets this study requirement, which has caught out a number of graduates who assumed their qualification was sufficient.

Because this stream carries no nominated occupation and no skills assessment, what actually determines your eligibility is the qualification itself, your age, your English language result, and your timing. You generally need to be under 35 years of age at the time of application, meet the visa’s English language requirement, and apply within six months of completing your course while you are still in Australia. Once granted, the visa gives you full, unrestricted work rights, with no cap on hours and no requirement to work in any particular occupation, for a period that depends on the level of your qualification.

The Path To Your 485 Grant

Moving From Study to Post-Higher Education Work

Checking your degree qualifies.

Before anything else, your qualification needs to be checked against the current study requirement, not the version that may have applied when you first enrolled. This stream requires a genuine degree-level award, and the rules around what counts changed materially in December 2024, catching graduates who assumed a shorter qualification would be enough.

  •       Qualification confirmed at Bachelor, Master, or Doctorate level
  •       Course confirmed as CRICOS-registered and taught entirely in English
  •       Study period confirmed at a minimum of 92 weeks across at least 16 calendar months in Australia
  •       Graduate Certificates checked carefully, since these no longer meet the study requirement on their own since 14 December 2024

Getting the personal eligibility details right.

Alongside your qualification, this stream carries its own set of personal eligibility rules that are easy to overlook while focused on study requirements alone. Age, English language results, and the timing of your application all need to line up, and unlike the qualification rules, there is very little room to correct a missed deadline once it has passed.

  •       Applicant generally under 35 years of age at the time of application, unless an exception applies
  •       English language requirement met through an accepted test result
  •       Application lodged within six months of completing the qualifying course
  •       Applicant holding, or having recently held, an eligible student visa at the time of application

Knowing your stay period and work rights.

The benefit of the Post-Higher Education Work stream is straightforward but varies by qualification level, and it is worth understanding clearly before you apply so you can plan your time in Australia around it. There is no nominated occupation to satisfy and no skills assessment to arrange, which sets this stream apart from several other post-study and skilled pathways.

  •       Bachelor’s and Master’s by Coursework graduates generally granted 2 years
  •       Master’s by Research and Doctoral graduates generally granted 3 years
  •       Full work rights granted, with no employer restrictions and no cap on working hours
  •       No nominated occupation or skills assessment required at any point in the application

From ImmiAccount to your future pathway.

The application itself is lodged online through ImmiAccount while you remain in Australia, along with the applicable visa application charge, which is reviewed and updated by the government periodically. Once granted, many graduates use their time on this visa to build the work experience and plan the pathway, whether skilled migration, employer sponsorship, or a regional visa, that will eventually lead toward permanent residency.

  •       Application lodged online through ImmiAccount, together with the current visa application charge
  •       Processing times reviewed, since these vary depending on individual circumstances and application volumes
  •       Graduates who study and live in a designated regional area may later qualify for the Second Post-Higher Education Work stream, extending their stay further
  •       Work experience gained on this visa mapped against future pathways such as skilled migration, employer sponsorship, or regional visas
