Visa Overview

How The Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804) Works

The Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804) is a permanent visa for eligible parents who are already in Australia and have reached the qualifying age for the Australian Age Pension. It allows applicants to apply for permanent residency while remaining close to their family during the application process, provided they continue to meet the conditions of their current visa or any bridging visa they hold. To be eligible, applicants must have an eligible sponsor, satisfy the Balance of Family Test and meet Australia’s health, character and other legislative requirements.

Once granted, the Subclass 804 visa provides permanent residency in Australia, allowing holders to live, work and study without restrictions. Permanent residents may also enrol in Medicare, Australia’s public healthcare system, and may be eligible to sponsor certain family members in the future. Those who meet the relevant residency and eligibility requirements may also have a pathway to Australian citizenship, making this visa a long-term option for eligible parents wishing to remain with their family in Australia.

Application Process

Your Aged Parent Visa Journey

Confirming your eligibility before you apply

Every successful Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804) application begins with a thorough assessment of your circumstances. This stage focuses on determining whether the Subclass 804 visa is the right pathway for you and whether both the applicant and sponsor meet the relevant eligibility requirements. Identifying any issues early helps ensure your application is prepared correctly and reduces the likelihood of unnecessary delays later in the process.

During this stage, we assess:
  • Whether the applicant has reached the qualifying age for the Australian Age Pension
  • Whether the applicant is eligible to apply from within Australia
  • The sponsor’s eligibility and relationship to the applicant
  • Whether the Balance of Family Test is satisfied
  • Health, character and legislative requirements
  • Whether an Assurance of Support may be required
  • Any individual circumstances that could affect the application

Preparing a complete application with supporting evidence

Once eligibility has been confirmed, the next step is preparing a complete and accurate visa application. Both the applicant and sponsor play an important role during this stage by providing the information and supporting documents required by the Department. Every document is carefully reviewed to ensure it is complete, consistent and ready for submission.

For Applicants

As the applicant, you must demonstrate that you satisfy all visa requirements and provide accurate information throughout the application process. Keeping your details up to date and supplying complete supporting evidence can help minimise delays during assessment.

Applicants will generally need to:
  • Meet the qualifying age for the Australian Age Pension
  • Be in Australia when lodging the application and when a decision is made
  • Satisfy the Balance of Family Test
  • Be sponsored by an eligible child or approved sponsor
  • Complete any required health examinations
  • Provide police clearance certificates if requested
  • Declare family members and previous visa history accurately
  • Notify the Department of any changes to your circumstances during processing
Applicant documents may include:
  • Current passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Identity documents
  • Evidence of your relationship to your sponsoring child
  • Police certificates
  • Health examination results
  • Additional supporting documents based on your circumstances

For Sponsors

An eligible sponsor plays a vital role in supporting the Parent Visa application. In most cases, the sponsor will be the applicant’s child who is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. Where the child is under 18 years of age, another eligible relative or approved community organisation may be able to act as the sponsor.

Sponsors will generally need to:
  • Meet the eligibility requirements to sponsor a Parent Visa applicant
  • Complete and sign the required sponsorship forms
  • Provide proof of Australian citizenship, permanent residency or eligible New Zealand citizenship
  • Provide evidence of their relationship to the applicant
  • Keep their contact details updated throughout the application
  • Assist with any additional information requested by the Department
  • Understand that an Assurance of Support may be required before the visa can be granted
Sponsor documents may include:
  • Australian passport or citizenship certificate
  • Permanent residency evidence (if applicable)
  • Birth certificate
  • Proof of relationship to the applicant
  • Government-issued photo identification
  • Proof of current residential address
  • Other supporting documents requested by the Department

Submitting your application and managing the assessment process

After all application forms and supporting documentation have been prepared, the visa application is lodged with the Department for assessment. During this stage, both the applicant and sponsor may need to respond to requests for additional information or clarification. Prompt communication and accurate responses help support the assessment process and keep the application progressing.

This stage includes:
  • Lodging the completed visa application
  • Submitting sponsorship documentation where required
  • Managing all communication with the Department
  • Monitoring the progress of the application
  • Responding to requests for additional information or supporting documents
  • Keeping both the applicant and sponsor informed throughout the assessment process

Guidance until your application is finalised

The Department may request further documentation or updated information while your application is being assessed. During this stage, both the applicant and sponsor should continue to meet their obligations, respond to requests promptly and notify the Department of any relevant changes in circumstances. Ongoing support helps ensure the application remains complete until a final decision is made.

Support throughout this stage may include:
  • Assisting with requests for additional information
  • Preparing and submitting further supporting documents
  • Helping applicants update changes to their personal circumstances where required
  • Assisting sponsors with additional sponsorship information or documentation
  • Providing guidance regarding Assurance of Support requirements, where applicable
  • Keeping you informed until a final visa decision has been made
  • Explaining the next steps following the outcome of your application
