Sponsorship for Skilled Professionals
Regional employers across Australia face genuine gaps in skilled roles that local recruitment cannot fill. The Subclass 494 visa allows approved businesses in designated regional areas to sponsor overseas workers for these positions, addressing workforce shortages that would otherwise go unresolved. For the worker, it means the right to live and work in a regional community for up to five years, with full-time employment tied to the sponsoring employer and eligible family members able to join the application. Once the relevant residency and employment requirements are met, visa holders may also become eligible to apply for permanent residency.
Sheen Migration acts for both sides of this process, employers seeking to sponsor and applicants seeking sponsorship. Our specialists assess eligibility, prepare the nomination and manage lodgement from the first enquiry through to a decision. We also advise sponsoring employers on their ongoing obligations, so the sponsorship remains compliant well beyond the initial application. Every case is reviewed on its own facts, giving both applicant and employer a clear view of requirements, timelines and next steps.
Eligibility Criteria
A genuine offer from an approved regional employer, nominating you for an eligible skilled occupation.
Qualifications, work experience and any occupational licence or registration required for the role, along with the required English language level.
Meeting Australia's health and character standards, applicable age limits, and all legislative requirements at the time of decision.
Application Process
Before any application is lodged, we review your occupation, job offer and personal circumstances against current program requirements. This step exists to confirm the Subclass 494 visa is genuinely the right pathway for you, rather than a costly attempt at the wrong visa. We look closely at your nominated occupation, your qualifications and work experience, and the details of your employment offer, and flag any gaps early so they can be addressed before lodgement.
Your employer must lodge a nomination confirming the position is genuine before your visa application can proceed. We work directly with the employer throughout this stage, helping them demonstrate a genuine need for the role, confirm the business operates in a designated regional area, and structure the position in line with Australian workplace laws. Getting this stage right the first time avoids delays that flow through to your entire application.
A complete and accurate document set is one of the biggest factors in how smoothly an application proceeds. We provide a personalised checklist based on your occupation and circumstances, then review every document against Departmental requirements before it’s submitted. This includes verifying qualifications, checking reference letters address the right criteria, and confirming test results and clearances are current and valid.
Once documentation is complete, we lodge the application with the Department of Home Affairs and take on all correspondence on your behalf, so you are not left interpreting Departmental requests on your own. If the Department requests additional information at any point, we respond promptly and keep both you and your employer informed of progress until a final decision is made.
