About the subclass 143 visa

What the Contributory Parent Visa offers your family

The Subclass 143 visa is a permanent visa for parents of settled Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens. Applicants can be inside or outside Australia when they apply, and eligible partners and dependent family members may be included on the same application. Once granted, holders can live, work and study anywhere in Australia and enrol in Medicare.

Unlike the standard Parent Visa (Subclass 103), the Subclass 143 requires a higher government contribution in exchange for generally faster processing, making it the preferred option for families who want to reunite sooner. Applicants still need to meet the Balance of Family Test, health and character requirements, and arrange an Assurance of Support before the visa is granted. Meeting the residence requirement afterwards can also open the door to Australian citizenship.

Eligibility criteria

What you need to qualify for the Subclass 143 visa

Relationship and sponsorship

You must be the parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, and you need an eligible sponsor, usually your child, to support your application.

Balance of Family Test

Most applicants must show that at least half of their children live in Australia, or that more of their children live in Australia than in any other single country. This test determines whether the parent visa category applies to you.

Health and character

Applicants must meet Australia's health and character requirements, which include medical examinations and, where requested, police clearance certificates from every country lived in.

Financial obligations

Before the visa is granted, applicants need an approved Assurance of Support and must have no outstanding debts to the Australian Government. All legislative requirements must still be met at the time a decision is made.

Start Your Visa Journey

From Documents To Decision, Here's How It Works

Understanding Your Eligibility

Every successful Parent Visa application begins with a thorough assessment. Before preparing your application, we take the time to understand your family circumstances, migration goals and eligibility for the Subclass 143 visa. This early review helps identify any potential issues and ensures the most suitable pathway is recommended from the outset.

During this stage, our migration specialists carefully assess both the applicant’s and sponsor’s eligibility against the Department of Home Affairs requirements. We explain each obligation in clear, practical terms so you understand what is required before moving forward.

During the initial assessment, we will:
  • Discuss your family circumstances and long-term migration goals.
  • Determine whether the Subclass 143 visa is the most suitable option.
  • Assess sponsorship eligibility.
  • Review the Balance of Family Test requirements.
  • Explain the Assurance of Support obligation.
  • Identify any potential eligibility concerns early.
  • Outline the expected application process and required documentation.
  • Answer your questions before preparation begins.

By completing a detailed assessment first, we can prepare your application with greater confidence and minimise avoidable issues later in the process.

Building A Complete Application

A well-prepared application depends on accurate information and properly organised supporting documents. Every document must meet Department requirements and clearly support the information provided in your application. Our team provides a personalised document checklist and carefully reviews each document before submission to help ensure nothing important is overlooked.

We work with both applicants and sponsors throughout this stage, making sure all documentation is consistent across the entire application.

Applicant documents may include:
  • Current passport.
  • Birth certificate.
  • Marriage certificate, where applicable.
  • Evidence of the relationship with the sponsoring child.
  • Police clearance certificates.
  • Health examination results.
  • Identity documents.
  • Previous visa information where relevant.
  • Additional supporting evidence based on individual circumstances.
Sponsor documents may include:
  • Australian passport or citizenship certificate.
  • Permanent residency evidence, where applicable.
  • Birth certificate.
  • Government-issued photo identification.
  • Proof of relationship to the applicant.
  • Current residential address evidence.
  • Sponsorship forms.
  • Other supporting documents requested by the Department.

Before your application is lodged, every document is checked for accuracy, consistency and compliance, helping ensure your submission is complete and professionally prepared.

Submitting Your Visa Application

Once every form has been completed and all supporting documents have been reviewed, your application is ready for lodgement. This stage is about ensuring the information presented to the Department of Home Affairs is accurate, organised and supported by the required evidence.

Our migration specialists prepare both the visa application and sponsorship documents together, helping maintain consistency across every part of the submission.

Before and during lodgement, we will:
  • Prepare your visa application forms.
  • Prepare the required sponsorship documentation.
  • Review all supporting evidence.
  • Check applications for completeness and accuracy.
  • Confirm all required documents have been included.
  • Lodge your application with the Department of Home Affairs.
  • Ensure all information is submitted correctly.
  • Manage correspondence with the Department following lodgement.

Submitting a carefully prepared application can help reduce delays caused by missing documents, inconsistent information or incomplete forms.

Guidance Until A Decision

Lodging your application is only one part of the process. During assessment, the Department may request additional documents or clarification before making a decision. Our team continues supporting both applicants and sponsors throughout this period, ensuring requests are managed promptly and your application continues progressing as smoothly as possible.

We remain your point of contact throughout the assessment process, keeping you informed of important updates and helping you understand what happens next.

Our ongoing support includes:
  • Monitoring the progress of your application.
  • Managing communication with the Department of Home Affairs.
  • Responding to requests for additional information.
  • Assisting with further supporting documents if required.
  • Helping you report any changes in personal circumstances.
  • Keeping applicants and sponsors informed throughout processing.
  • Providing guidance on any next steps during assessment.
  • Continuing support until a final visa decision has been made.

From your first consultation through to the Department’s final decision, our migration specialists are committed to providing clear guidance, accurate preparation and ongoing support at every stage of your Subclass 143 visa journey.
