Temporary Parent Visa
The Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 173) allows eligible parents of Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens to live in Australia for up to two years. As the first stage of the contributory parent visa pathway, it provides an opportunity to reunite with family sooner while preparing to apply for the permanent Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143).
In addition to full work and study rights, the Subclass 173 visa offers multiple travel throughout its validity and allows eligible family members to be included in the application. It also gives families the flexibility to spread the government visa application charges across two applications instead of paying the full amount upfront, making the journey towards permanent residency more manageable.
Eligibility Requirements
You must be the parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. You'll also need an approved eligible sponsor to support your application.
Applicants must satisfy the Balance of Family Test, meet Australia's health and character requirements, have no outstanding debts to the Australian Government, and meet all legislative requirements at the time a decision is made.
You must not currently hold or have previously applied for a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 870). Our migration specialists can assess your circumstances and confirm whether you meet the eligibility criteria before you apply.
Our Application Process
Every application begins with a detailed consultation to understand your circumstances and determine whether the Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 173) is the right pathway for you. We explain how the visa works, discuss your long-term migration plans and answer any questions you may have before you proceed.
Once you decide to move forward, our migration specialists conduct a comprehensive assessment of your eligibility. We review your sponsorship arrangements, assess the Balance of Family Test and identify the documents needed to support your application. Every document is carefully checked before lodgement to help reduce the risk of delays.
After your application has been thoroughly prepared, we lodge both the visa and sponsorship applications with the Department of Home Affairs. Our team manages correspondence with the Department, monitors your application and assists with any additional information requests throughout the assessment process.
The Subclass 173 visa is designed as the first stage of a two-step pathway towards permanent residency. Before your temporary visa expires, we help you prepare for the Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143), ensuring your transition is planned well in advance and your application is ready when the time comes.
